Overview

The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Lived Experience Alliance is a collective of Lived Experience Experts from a variety of backgrounds including a wide variety of ages, locations, conditions, and ethnicities whose mission will be to champion the growth of Lived Experience Communities throughout the SIDS whose role will be to advance the inclusion of lived experience expertise in research, policy-making and crisis response design through storytelling, data collection and sustainable commun..
Key Messages

Why do we need a SIDS Lived Experience Community? We are the Voices of SIDS!

WHO Data shows that over half of people in SIDS are dying prematurely from NCDs and the rate of hypertension is over 30% in almost all of the countries. Lived Experience Country Representation is an important mechanism in STIGMA Reduction, which is one of the greatest cultural and social barriers to care for persons living with NCDs and Mental health conditions. As a community of practice for Lived Experience, we aim foster standards for inclusion of Lived Experience representation throughout SIDS Public Health Leadership Ecosystem.

What are the goals of this SIDS Lived Experience Community?

We are looking to Building Capacity of Lived Experience Communities through

  • Fostering Community Development through programmes offering training in Advocacy, Leadership, Technology, Sustainable Development Practices and Policies #globalgoals, Education around key issues such as Climate Change, Disaster Mitigation, Response and Recovery,
  • Filling in Gaps in Research and Reporting in Countries on NCDs and Mental Health Conditions.
  • Using technology, storytelling and data collection as advocacy and education tools to raise awareness around Lived Experiences in the SIDS regarding Climate Change, MHPSS Response to Crisis and Emergency Situations, Service Conditions, NCDs, Chronic Illnesses,
  • Fostering official channels for representation and inclusion between SIDS Lived Experience Ambassadors and regional and global health leaders

Contributing to the SIDS 2023 Conferences on NCD’s and Mental Health

A ministerial conference is organized in 2023 in response to paragraph 75(e) of resolution A/RES/69/15 (SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action [SAMOA] Pathway), which includes a commitment to “enable cooperation among Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on diseases by using existing international and regional forums to convene joint biennial meetings of ministers of health and other relevant sectors to respond in particular to NCDs
