The WHO Global Noncommunicable Diseases Platform (GNP) is a department in the WHO Division on Universal Health Coverage/Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases. The overall purpose of the GNP is to coordinate the United Nations system and mobilize non-State actors to unlock their transformative potential to complement and enhance WHO’s work in supporting governments develop whole-of-government and whole-of-society responses to address NCD-related SDGs.
Established in 2019, the Global NCD Platform leverages GCM/NCD and UNIATF mandates by the World Health Assembly and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolutions respectively. The GNP Director’s Officefacilitates synergies between the GCM/NCD’s and UNIATF’s work, and coordinates several strategic multi-partner projects and initiatives to promote multisectoral policies.
The Global NCD Platform (GNP) works to place NCDs high-up on political, health and development agendas, taking on the role of a facilitator, a convener and an accelerator of action across sectors and stakeholders. The GNP supports global, regional and country-level implementation of commitments articulated in the political declarations and outcomes of the three UNGA High-level Meetings on NCD Prevention and Control (2011; 2014 and 2018), and the recommendations of the WHO Independent High-level Commission on NCDs.
The Task Force brings together 45 United Nations system agencies and intergovernmental organizations to support governments to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including mental health conditions, to meet the goals and targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
WHO’s Coordination Mechanism on the Prevention andControl of Noncommunicable Diseases (WHO GCM/NCD) is a Member State-led platform facilitating multi-stakeholder engagement and cross-sectoral collaboration to prevent andcontrol NCDs and mental health conditions. Its Participants unite their knowledge, experience and resources to advance coherent and effective measures for the prevention and control of NCDs.
The GNP Director’s Office facilitates synergies between the GCM/NCD’s and UNIATF’s work, and coordinates several strategic multi-partner projects and initiatives to promote multisectoral policies. It also actively advocates for increased investments and capacity building in low- and middle-income countries to achieve Universal Health Care, SDG 3.4 and other health-related SDG targets.
