Chronic respiratory diseases in the WHO European Region

This report on chronic respiratory diseases (‎CRDs)‎ in the WHO European Region, developed by WHO and the European Respiratory Society (‎ERS)‎, highlights that despite progress in reducing CRD mortality, their burden and related inequities remain high.

Within the Region, disparities are evident, with high CRD prevalence in the western part, but high hospitalization and mortality rates in the eastern part. This report emphasizes the need for integrated health system responses and prioritization of resources to address these disparities and advance CRD surveillance, research and innovation agendas. It provides a set of essential interventions, policy options and country examples, emphasizing the importance of tobacco and air quality control, addressing social determinants of health and ensuring continuum of care. By leveraging this report, countries can prioritize essential CRD interventions, enhance their health systems, reduce inequities and improve the quality of life for those living with CRDs.
