Chronic Respiratory Diseases in the WHO European Region: A Joint WHO–ERS Report

This technical report, jointly developed by WHO and the European Respiratory Society (ERS), presents the latest evidence and analysis on the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) in the WHO European Region. Despite reductions in mortality, CRDs, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, remain a major public health challenge, with COPD accounting for nearly 80% of CRD-related deaths.

The report projects a 23% increase in global COPD cases by 2050, disproportionately affecting women and populations in low- and middle-income countries. It also highlights stark regional disparities: Western countries show higher prevalence, while Eastern countries bear a greater burden of hospitalizations and deaths.

Offering a roadmap for action, the report outlines essential interventions, strategic policy options, and country case studies. It emphasizes integrated health system responses, strengthened surveillance and innovation, and multisectoral approaches, including tobacco control, air quality improvement, and addressing the social determinants of health.

This resource supports policymakers, practitioners, and advocates in reducing inequities, enhancing CRD care and prevention, and improving quality of life for affected populations.
