Personal interventions and risk communication on Air Pollution

This report presents the results of an expert consultation whose objectives were to review and assess the current scientific evidence on questions related to protection measures that individuals can take (or so-called personal interventions) to reduce their exposure to air pollution. Such measures include wearing respirators, using indoor portable air filters (cleaners), or avoiding certain places and limiting activities, or exercising in an environment with high levels of air pollution. It was agreed, however, that these measures are the least desirable choice in the hierarchy of interventions - the most preferred being public policies aiming at reducing emissions. The report also discusses the communication challenges associated with information related to air pollution and health impacts, such as air pollution sources, Air Quality Index (AQI), and the role of medical societies.
