This WHO technical information note on sugars and dental caries highlights the impact of sugar consumption on the global burden of dental caries. Free sugars, found in various foods and beverages, are the primary dietary factor in the development of dental caries. Consumption of sugars is influenced by a range of factors including the social and commercial determinants of health. To support populations in reducing their sugar consumption, there are policy options available that are recommended by WHO for implementation in countries.
