Historic win for kidney health as WHO adopts global resolution

The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) welcomes the adoption of the World Health Organization (WHO) kidney health resolution at the 78th World Health Assembly, a landmark achievement in the global fight against kidney disease.

This historic step marks the first time kidney health has been formally prioritized within the WHO noncommunicable diseases (NCD) agenda, paving the way for earlier detection, better prevention, improved access to treatment, and stronger health systems in alignment with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.4. and 3.8.

A unified push for kidney health in response to global urgency

This milestone results from years of dedicated efforts by nephrology societies, healthcare professionals, patient advocates, civil society, and other stakeholders to recognize and address the alarming and growing burden of kidney disease, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

ISN President Marcello Tonelli commented, “Today is a turning point for kidney health, thanks to Guatemala’s leadership and the growing awareness among Member States of how widespread and serious kidney disease really is. It’s inspiring to see so many groups — including those focused on diabetes and heart health — came together in support, showing just how central kidney care is to the fight against chronic diseases.”

ISN Patient Liaison Advisory Group member and policy director of the UK’s leading kidney patient support charity, Kidney Care UK, Fiona Loud, also emphasized the importance of the outcome, stating: “Seeing kidney disease prevention receive this international recognition — and the UK government adopting and supporting the resolution — is a significant moment for the kidney community.”

What’s next: from resolution to action
The ISN thanks all those who have supported the resolution and is ready to support Member States in implementing its commitments. “Passing this resolution is only the beginning,” states Professor Tonelli, “Now we must follow-through and turn words into actions: We need steady investment, teamwork across sectors, and real action in every corner of the globe. This isn’t just about better kidney care — it’s about making healthcare fairer and more accessible for everyone, especially in lower-income countries that need it most.”
