Hidden No More: International Thalassaemia Day 2026 calls for action to find the undiagnosed and support the unseen

| 09 Mar 2026

Every year on 8 May, International Thalassaemia Day serves as a global platform to raise awareness of thalassaemia and to promote coordinated action to strengthen prevention, diagnosis and comprehensive care for this inherited blood disorder worldwide.

The 2026 campaign, led by the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) and its global network, is guided by the theme “Hidden No More: Finding the Undiagnosed. Supporting the Unseen.” The theme highlights a critical yet often overlooked challenge: many individuals affected by thalassaemia remain undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or insufficiently supported within health systems across the world.

Despite significant advances in screening, prevention, and treatment, in many countries, limited awareness, insufficient screening programmes, and gaps in diagnostic pathways mean that thalassaemia may remain undetected until pregnancy or early childhood, with preventable consequences for affected individuals and families.

At the same time, many people already living with the condition continue to remain largely unseen and insufficiently supported, facing barriers such as fragmented care, limited psychosocial support, and health systems that do not adequately prioritise their needs.

Through the 2026 campaign, the objective is to highlight the hidden burden of thalassaemia and promote earlier detection, strengthened diagnostic pathways, and more responsive systems of care that recognise and support the needs of affected individuals throughout their lives.

To mark the Day, TIF is launching a series of global awareness and advocacy initiatives, including digital outreach, stakeholder engagement activities and the dissemination of key campaign messages across its international network, alongside the sharing of personal stories from the thalassaemia community and the global “Bring Thal to Light” landmark illumination initiative.
