The Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD) is a network of national and international organizations, institutions and agencies, with a vision of “a world where all people breathe freely”.
Key Messages

Approximately half a billion people live with asthma and COPD

Every year, nearly 4 million people die due to asthma and COPD

More than one million of these deaths occur “prematurely” – in people aged under 70 years. 90% of these premature deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. [Source: WHO Global Health Estimates 2019] 

Access to diagnosis and care is a huge problem in many countries

Potentially lifesaving bronchodilator inhalers are only available in 60% of low and lower-middle income countries, and inhaled corticosteroids in 40% [Source: WHO NCD country capacity survey 2021]
